On 4 November, 2019, the US Treasury Department sanctioned nine "appointees by Ali Khamenei," including Ebrahim Ra'isi. According to a statement from the Treasury Department, these individuals were involved in "repressions inside and outside Iran." The statement referred to Raisi’s involvement in “brutal crackdown on Iran’s Green Movement” and his participation “in so-called "death commission" that ordered the extrajudicial executions of thousands of political prisoners in 1988.”
