In a decision dated 10 October 2011, the European Union placed Morteza Tamaddon on its human rights sanctions list for its role in the widespread and severe violation of the rights of Iranian citizens. According to the EU statement, Morteza Tamadon has been sanctioned for direct responsibility for "arresting and suppressing protesters" following the election results of 2009 and "harassing" Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi.
In June 2014, the US Treasury Department also placed Morteza Tamaddon on the sanctions list for "restricting freedom of expression and peaceful assembly," "harassing Mir Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi," and "ordering the shutdown of the cell phones system during protests.". According to this decision, the possible assets of Morteza Tamadon will be confiscated in the United States and he will be banned from entering this country.
